STACI BROWN BROOKS
News staff writer
A PROPER WELCOME
Starving when we arrived, we were grateful for the complimentary array of crackers and creamy spreads, including the totally craveable Ponderosa. We barely had a chance to preview all the ice cream flavors before our sandwiches arrived.
WHAT WE ORDERED
My friend ordered a chicken salad croissant. "It's good, plain chicken salad for people who like it that way. It contains no nuts or fruit," she said. I had the turkey and smoked gouda sandwich, which came with cranberry salsa. The sandwiches come with a choice of pasta salad, potato salad, pita chips, black bean salsa and chips, or a side salad. We opted for pasta salad. Everything we had was tasty and fresh. The strawberry lemonade was delicious.
ON TO THE ICE CREAM
Our lunch was great, but I admit I devoured my sandwich as quickly as I could so I could get to the ice cream. They have more than 30 flavors. Though I was tempted to order a triple scoop, I quieted my inner 4-year-old and just went with a double: Butter Pecan and Strawberried Alive. My friend ordered Coojo (Cappuccino meets Cookies and Cream) and Mint Chocolate Chip. You should definitely believe the hype on Strawberried Alive - it's one of the state tourism board's "100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die." It is beyond delightful.
LUNCH HOUR?
You could be in and out in 30 minutes, but the homey atmosphere, cow squeeze toy and all that ice cream just force you to relax. It's the perfect place for girl talk. Distance - unless you work along the U.S. 280 corridor - would be the big time chomper. Add an extra minute or so for playing with that squeeze toy.

Ok, it's time for someone to 'fess up. Who knew a Wright Dairy store was opening in Birmingham and did not pass this crucial information along to me? These are things I need to know, people!
If you're in the dark about Wright Dairy , let me fill you in. Based out of Alexandria, Alabama, Wright Dairy pasteurizes and bottles their own milk right on the farm. Aside from the fact that their cows are not given growth hormones, the milk is also not homogenized. Read more here about why their milk is different from the milk you buy in stores.
Aside from the milk, Wright Dairy also makes 20+ flavors of ice cream. Some of the flavors are Death by Chocolate (my personal favorite), All American Apple Pie, Nanner Pudding, Purple Cow, Blueberry Blues and Strawberry Cheesecake. All of these hand-dipped flavors are available by the pint or by the scoop at the new store. In addition to the variety of ice cream, cheeses and milk for sale, there is also a menu of sandwiches and salads to choose from.
Run, do not walk, to the Wright Dairy store today. Have some ice cream, pick up a gallon of chocolate milk (so thick and rich it tastes like a melted chocolate milkshake) or try a pimento cheese sandwich. Wright Dairy Ice Cream and Natural Foods is located on 280 in the Inverness Heights Market shopping center (just past the Home Depot if you're traveling east on 280, up the hill from the Petsmart and AC Moore).
